The mediums that were explored include charcoal, hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, scratchboard, and shading with a white pencil on black paper. These mediums can be used for shading, since they are all characterized by by different variances of black and white. What makes them different is their difficulty. For example, you have to be very careful with scratchboard, charcoal, and white pencil shading since they're rather hard to erase and redo. On the other hand, hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling can be done with any drawing/painting utensil. I personally prefer using hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling, since I'm more of a drawer and tend to use pencil whenever I shade. My least favorite would have to be scratchboard, for it was rather difficult for me to create anything with it.
In the drawing with the surfboard, I addressed the topics of Shapes and Lines and Rhythm and Repetition. I repeatedly used diagonal lines, giving the impression the wave is rising up, perfect for surfing.
In the drawing displaying the person gazing up at the moon, I utilized the topics of Cropping, Viewpoint, and Positioning. I made the moon large enough to where it would crop out of the drawing, gave the picture a dynamic view by having the sizes vary, and had the person view the moon from a perspective in where it might give the viewer the impression that the moon was very large. As for the final drawing, I used the Rule of Thirds, creating the drawing so that everything seems balanced and is clearly visible to the viewer. Artists Collaborate For this particular piece, I had trouble trying to interpret how stereotypically, Americans are not only lazy, as indicated by the recliner, but how they're also "fat". I turned to my fellow artists for help and as a result, they pitched the idea of somehow incorporating cheeseburgers into my drawing, this particular food item being a pretty good example of a "fat" lifestyle here in America. Artists ObserveIf one pays attention the detail of the drawing, they can see that the flag is giving way to the weight of the recliner, it appearing as if one decided to recline even further, they could easily rip a hole into our prideful flag. I feel that this a valid representation on just how a stereotype can effect someone. In this case, it may be rather insulting for someone to suggest to a hard-working American that they're fat and lazy.
